It's the winter in Israel. And while we welcome all of the rain we can get, it often brings along with it an unwanted guest: mold.
Unfortunately, mold can be found in any home - old or new - and unless properly taken care of, will continuously return.
The one benefit of mold is that it can be spotted very easily without any fancy tools or equipment. Mold removers can be purchased in most pharmacies and supermarkets and usually homeowners can take care of it themselves, without hiring a professional.
As a bedek bayit inspector, there are a few things I make sure to check in every home so I can inform the homeowner of the possibility for impending mold:
• Ventilation of rooms - there is a standard for how much ventilation is required in every room of a home. Basements or poorly ventilated rooms have a higher chance of growing mold.
• Window seals - a lot of mold problems originate from windows that are not properly sealed and therefore expose the walls to water. An inspector will ensure that the windows are completely flush with the walls, eliminating moisture.
• Moisture meter - particularly when inspecting an existing home, mold hiding behind the walls can be checked using a moisture meter tool. If moisture is detected, it is very likely that mold will begin to grow, if it had not already.
Keeping windows open when it is not raining and investing in a dehumidifier can greatly reduce the risk of mold developing in your home.
Additionally, you can paint your home with an anti-mold paint which is designed to repel the emergence of mold.
